Consumer Debt Collection Practices (ANPRM) | Closed Rule

The industry tries to make people's lives miserable by repeated calls. Sometimes people have justifiable reasons they have not paid a debt (unemployment, disputed amount). They are like vultures preying on people and their actions need to be limited. I make it a rule not to deal with collection agencies at all. I do not answer calls I don't recognize and if I know it is a debt collector I block their number. It is pretty effective. Legislation should be passed to prevent the calls altogether and they should be limited to mailing requests for payment.

Default judgements should not be allowed. In Arapahoe county (littleton, CO) it is well known that a landlord can get a judgement and evict a tenant even if their is no justification. Republican judges always side with the property owners at the tenants expense.

The problem is that this often leads to duplicate reports on credit files and each time the debt is sold the date is updated so it looks like a new collection is on the credit report and this impacts the FICO. ATT has me owing a fee for terminating my cellular contract early (due to problems with their poor service). This $300 fee has been sold so many times (I have never been notified) but it appears several times on my credit report and has been made to look like a recent debt when it is from 2008.

I have disputed debts with the credit bureaus but they do not even try to resolve the issues. You get a standard response from them. It is in their interest not to resolve issues. Furthermore, you cannot get them on the phone and if you mail your disputes to them you never get a response. They are part of the rip-off system to prey on consumers.

There should be only one credit bureau. They all contradict each other and it is a nightmare to get anything resolved. They should be highly regulated. This is an industry making money off making peoples lives miserable and ensuring no-one can get mortgages or loans. They are crippling the economy. They are in the pockets of the banks and big corporations.
